Packaging Design - Graphic Design Process

Stages of The Process Flow Design

1.

Initial consultation

When it comes to designing packaging there are a couple of things we need to consider. The packaging can be designed including the layout of the box and the graphics or only just the graphics. Depending on your budget you will need to take the decision of what is the best for your business and how much you are willing to invest. We will assist you designing both the packaging box and the graphics but the costs will be different since designing of the box will require the following:

a. Obtaining samples from you to design the best size (s) and shape.
b.

Developing prototypes of the packaging concepts and assemble them to determine their functionality

c. Test different art board thicknesses to provide the best protection to the product.
d. Obtaining quotations for the cutting mould that will be used to trim the printed packaging (one off payment).

If what you need is just require the artwork we will request from you the dimensions and shape of the packaging box you have selected so we can design the graphics accordingly. Ask your preferred printer if they have the cutting die for a packaging box with the right dimensions for your product and they might be able to help you. This could save you spending on the cutting form and the design of the packaging itself.

2. Authorisation to commence

Upon giving consideration to your individual requirements, we will respond with an estimate based on the information gathered previously. We require you to sign the ‘commencement agreement’ and fax it back to us.

3. Development of drafts

The first stage in the development, is to let as many ideas and concepts loose as possible. This will entail our designers laying out multiple designs on ‘paper’ in varying styles and colours to achieve a broad range of possibilities from which to refine. After sorting through the drafts that have potential and the ones that don’t, we will then present approximately three different options to you for your consideration.

4. Refinement of drafts

This stage offers you the opportunity to tell us what you like and what you don’t. There may be aspects of one or two drafts that appeal and may be refined further, or combined to create a new draft. It is now that you will start forming a definite idea of the direction you want to take it – the main aim of this stage is to define that direction.

5. Selection of final design

After refining the initial drafts, it is now time to concentrate it down to one design. This final design may be selected directly from a draft, or it might incorporate aspects from several of the drafts.

6. Refinement of final design

Our designers will now ‘tweak’ the final design, paying attention to any aspects that weren’t quite right or needed further refinement. Now is also the time to finalise colour choices.

7. Approval of final design

It may take two or three further “back-and-forth’s” between ourselves and yourself to finalise the final single design, but eventually we will arrive at the finished product, from which we will require approval to finalise the project.

8. Printing and final approval

Pakamedia Grafik is able to take care of all your printing needs - we will provide a printing quote for your consideration. The printer will produce a full-colour hard-copy proof, which you must check over carefully and sign-off as your final approval.
